4WD vs Differential Lock: What First-Time Tractor Buyers Need to Know

If you’re in the market for a tractor, you’ll probably wonder if you really need 4WD. If you plan to do loader work with your tractor, if your property features the rolling hills so common in this area, or if there’s a chance you might use your tractor in muddy conditions, you’ll want a 4WD tractor.  

Luckily, all 1-4 series John Deere tractors come with four-wheel drive standard.  

Another question that may not cross your mind right away – but is important to understand – is what differential lock does, and how it differs from four-wheel drive (4WD) on your John Deere tractor.  

People often confuse these two features, but they solve different problems. This guide breaks it down, and includes a guide to engaging diff lock and 4WD on our most popular John Deere tractors.  

4WD vs Differential Lock: What’s the Difference? 

What 4WD Does 

4WD (four-wheel drive) sends power to both the front and rear wheels of your tractor. 

Why that matters: 

  • Improves traction in mud, loose soil, or gravel 
  • Helps with loader work (moving dirt, gravel, mulch) 
  • Keeps you moving on hills or uneven ground 

Think of 4WD as extra gripping power across the whole machine. 

What Differential Lock Does 

Differential lock connects the rear wheels together, forcing them to spin at the same speed. 

Why that matters: 

  • Prevents one wheel from spinning while the other sits still 
  • Helps you get unstuck in slippery conditions 
  • Engages only when needed (usually via foot pedal) 

Diff lock is a temporary traction boost. Once you’re out of the slippery spot, disengage differential lock.  

When to Use 4WD vs Differential Lock 

Use 4WD when: 

  • You’re on hills or slopes 
  • Using a front-end loader 
  • Driving on gravel or loose soil 
  • Working in wet or muddy conditions 

Use Differential Lock when: 

  • One wheel is spinning 
  • You’re stuck or about to get stuck 
  • You need a quick traction boost

Problem: Your Tractor Is Spinning One Wheel 

One of the most common issues first-time tractor owners face is seeing one rear tire spinning while the other does nothing. 

Your tractor’s differential sends power to the wheel with the least resistance—which means one tire spins, the other stays still, and you get stuck.  

The solution: Use differential lock 

Engaging diff lock: 

  • Forces both rear wheels to spin together 
  • Instantly improves traction 
  • Helps you get unstuck quickly 

Once you’re moving again, disengage differential lock to return to normal operation. 

How to Use 4WD and Differential Lock on John Deere Tractors 

Engaging 4WD or the differential lock on a John Deere compact tractor is easy. The location of the controls differ by tractor.

FAQ  


Should I use 4WD all the time on a tractor? 

No. 4WD does not need to be used in high-traction situations, like dry or firm surfaces. It is most likely to help out on slopes, in mud or wet ground, on gravel, and during loader work. If 4WD isn’t needed, it shouldn’t be used to reduce extra wear on tires and drivelines.  


My tractor is spinning one wheel – how do I fix it?  

If your tractor is stuck in the mud – or red Alabama clay – with one wheel spinning, you should engage the differential lock to get both rear wheels spinning at the same speed.  


What happens when you engage differential lock? 

Differential lock will lock the left and right rear axles together and both wheels will turn at the same speed. That gives you better traction, but steering may get harder while diff lock is engaged.  


Does 4WD help a tractor pull more? 

It can! By distributing power to all four wheels, 4WD improves traction, which helps the tractor pull heavier loads more effectively—especially on uneven or slippery ground. 


Is 4WD worth it on a compact tractor?  

For our customers in North Alabama and Middle Tennessee who are often working on rugged terrain or doing loader work, 4WD is definitely worth it. And, it comes standard on all 1-4 Series John Deere tractors. Only some John Deere lawn tractors have 4WD; namely, the X700 sreies. X500 lawn tractors have traction-assist style rear lock on some models.  


What are the advantages of a 4WD tractor?  

4WD provides better traction, safer operation on slopes, improved performance in mud or loose soil, and better results during loader work. 


Is a 4WD tractor needed for 5 acres?  

Often, yes—especially if your land includes hills, clay soil, or requires material handling. For flat, dry land, 2WD may be enough, but 4WD is more versatile.
