There is really no one-size-fits-all tractor. They vary by size, weight and horsepower for a reason: to tackle different jobs. One of the most important things to consider when you start looking for a tractor is the type of transmission that you need.
Our goal with this blog is to give you an idea of what’s out there and what might be best for the tasks that you have planned for your tractor.

What is a transmission and how do they work?
In most motorized equipment and vehicles, the transmission is what takes the rotational power from the engine and transmits it to the wheels, allowing the machine to move.
The transmission matches differently sized gears to help the machine move with more (or less) speed or torque. Speed and torque tend to have an inverse relationship.
You can think of speed as the actual speed of the machine. That is, distance over time.
Think of torque as the power driving the machine forward.
As you shift gears and make the tractor faster, you will typically have less torque. This means that carrying heavy loads might require you to stay in a lower gear or range.
Why are there different types?
Certain machines are designed for certain tasks, and transmissions are part of that design.
Some tractors have a powershift transmission that is similar to that of a manual automobile, with a manual clutch, ranges and gears. These are generally more durable and able to handle more horsepower. Think baling hay, running heavy implements or using multiple PTOs.
Others use a hydrostatic transmission with “forward” and “reverse” pedals, making jobs that require frequent changes of direction easier. These are great for loader work, bush-hogging, and grading curvy gravel roads.
Larger John Deere row crop tractors use an intelligent variable transmission (IVT) that automatically shifts depending on the load.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but these are three of the most common examples you would see today when browsing tractors at your local John Deere dealer.
Hydrostatic Transmission (eHydro™)
A hydrostatic transmission makes equipment easier to operate by using hydraulic fluid instead of gears to transfer power, giving you smooth, clutch-free control over speed and direction. In practice, that means simple pedal operation, easy forward and reverse changes, and the ability to adjust speed on the fly—ideal for jobs that require manual precision and frequent maneuvering.
These systems are known for their smooth performance and ease of use, though they do require routine maintenance like keeping fluid clean and levels correct, and they may trade a bit of raw power compared to gear-driven transmissions in tougher conditions.
eHydro™ is John Deere’s brand of hydrostatic transmissions for tractors. Until recently, it has only been available on compact utility tractors. Starting in 2026, certain models in the John Deere 5E Series including the 5060E, 5067E and 5075E will be available with eHydro transmissions.
These machines will also include great features like:
- Automotive Cruise Control to keep your speed and RPMs consistent when operating powered implements.
- SpeedMatchTM to set your desired max speed.
- MotionMatchTM to help customize your tractor’s acceleration and deceleration to your preferences.
- LoadMatchTM to help prevent stalling out under heavy loads.

Powershift Transmissions
If you’re weighing transmission options, a powershift lands right between the simplicity of hydrostatic and the seamless feel of an IVT. Like a traditional gearbox, it uses hydraulic pressure and clutch packs to move through gears—but the big win is being able to shift on the fly without touching the clutch.
Compared to a hydrostatic, which is great for precise speed control but can feel limited on power efficiency in heavy work, a powershift gives you more direct pulling performance and better efficiency under load. And while an IVT offers stepless, car-like smoothness, a powershift is often a more straightforward, proven setup that still lets you move through multiple gears quickly and stay focused on the job.
The PowrReverser™, PowerQuad™ and Powr8™ Transmissions are all examples of powershift transmissions.
These are typically an option on mid-sized utility tractors and smaller row crop tracrors, like the John Deere 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series
Intelligent Variable Transmissions (IVT)
Unlike a PowerShift, where you’re still stepping through gears, an IVT adjusts ratios on the fly. That way you get exactly the speed and power you need at any moment. And compared to a hydrostatic, which gives great low-speed control but can feel less efficient in heavy pulling, an IVT is built to handle both precision work and high-load field jobs with strong efficiency.
The system also constantly communicates between the engine and transmission so it can automatically adjust. The end result is a super smooth, responsive drive that’s easy to run and keeps you comfortable all day long.
These transmissions are available on large utility tractors and row crop tractors, from the 6M Series up to the 7R Series.
E18™ & E23™ Transmissions
Most of John Deere’s largest tractors feature an e23 transmission. This is essentially a powershift transmission with an efficiency manager, which makes the operation and feel of the machine similar to that of a tractor equipped with an IVT transmission.
