The Importance of Selecting the Perfect Tractor for Your Small Farm

Picking the right tractor can really help a small farm work better and get more done. Whether you’re tending to a 1-acre homestead or a 5-acre farm, having the right machinery can make tasks like plowing, tilling, mowing, brush hogging, and moving materials much easier.

The right tractor will handle your current needs and adapt to future tasks as your farm grows. Investing in a tractor with versatile features and reliable support is critical for long-term success.

John Deere: The Ultimate Choice for Versatility and Ease of Use

John Deere tractors are renowned for their user-friendly features and reliable performance. The 1025R and 3E models, for instance, have side-by-side Twin Touch™ pedals, which make directional changes as easy as driving a car. This intuitive control system reduces the learning curve, making it ideal for novice and experienced farmers alike.

Additionally, John Deere’s strong dealer support from TriGreen Equipment ensures you have access to parts and a highly-trained service department whenever you need it. This level of support helps keep your tractor running smoothly. It’ll give you the peace of mind you need to focus on your small farm.

Comparing Features: John Deere vs. Kubota

When comparing John Deere and Kubota tractors, it’s clear that each brand has its strengths. However, John Deere’s 1 Series and 3 Series tractors stand out due to features like the AutoConnect™ Deck System, which allows for quick and easy removal of the belly mower without any tools or ramps. The Quik-Park™ Loader System and Quik-Knect™ PTO Connection System further enhance the versatility and ease of use. A John Deere compact tractor from TriGreen Equipment is backed by the TriGreen Secure 10 Year Warranty and experienced dealer support.

Kubota also offers tractor options that could fit the needs of a small farm. Kubota’s BX sub-compact tractors start at a lower horsepower than Deere’s 1 Series, so make sure you’re comparing similar horsepower for prices and features. Kubota’s drive-over mower deck requires ramps to install, slowing you down when you’re trying to get work done. The L60 Series is comparable to John Deere’s 3 Series, but it doesn’t have the same level of technology and comfort. Learn more about key differences between Kubota and Deere compact tractors here.

The bottom line: John Deere’s focus on user-friendly features and robust dealer support makes it a top choice for small farm owners.

The Best Tractor Models for 1 Acre Farms

The first step in determining the best tractor for your acreage is to think about the terrain. Will you be working a garden on a flat parcel? Or hauling bedding and manure up and around hills?

If your 1-acre farm is mostly flat, the John Deere 1025R could be a perfect fit. Its compact size and versatile features make it ideal for smaller, flat properties while still providing the power and capabilities needed for various tasks. It offers a class-leading mid-mount belly mower for mowing the lawn, but is still tough, with a 758 pound lift capacity measured 24 inches behind the link arms.

If your property is hillier, which isn’t unusual in North Alabama and Middle Tennessee, you may need a model with more horsepower and a bigger, heavier chassis. The John Deere 3025E or 3032E are excellent choices for this terrain, and you’ll want to make sure you have proper ballasting to operate safely. The 3E tractors are popular, and for good reason – they maneuver well in tight spaces and can lift heavy loads. They’re compatible with a ton of implements, too – including brush hogs, pallet forks and backhoes.

The Best Tractor Models for 5 Acre Farms

For larger 5-acre farms, the terrain again plays a significant role in choosing the right tractor. Hillier properties will benefit from models like the John Deere 3025E or 3032E, which offer the necessary horsepower and stability for challenging landscapes. For frequent use or heavy lifting, a 4044M may also be a good choice.

For flatter 5-acre farms, the John Deere 1025R continues to be a strong contender due to its affordability, versatility and ease of use. Its ability to handle a loader, belly mower, and backhoe or other 3-point implement at one time make it a valuable asset for various tasks.

Essential Tractor Implements for 1 Acre and 5 Acre Farms

John Deere tractors are designed to be highly versatile, accommodating a range of implements that can be easily attached and detached. The John Deere 1025R, for example, features the AutoConnect™ Mower Deck, loader, and backhoe, all of which can be quickly swapped out to meet your farming needs.

These features make it easy to transition between tasks like mowing, digging, and hauling, ensuring that you can get more done in less time. Some of our most popular implements to make the most of your tractor on a homestead include:

  • Rotary cutter: you might hear this called a brush hog. It’s a 3-point mower implement designed to handle brush and tall weeds. They’re super handy in the summertime when undergrowth and brush start to take over the property!
  • Loader: we rarely sell a small tractor without a loader and bucket. They’re the do-it-all option for your tractor, most popular for moving dirt or mucking out stalls. Many folks love swapping the loader out for pallet forks.
  • Box blade: levelling gravel and dirt is a breeze with a box blade. If your small farm has land to level or a drive to maintain, this implement will be a handy addition
  • Mid-mount mower: just because it’s a farm doesn’t mean it shouldn’t look nice! This belly mower will take good care of grass around chicken coops and gardens with ease.

Moving Bales on a Small Farm

One of the most common questions we get at TriGreen is about what size tractor is needed to move hay bales. That’s dependent on the size and weight of the bale, but a good rule of thumb is that frequently moving large bales will require a heavier tractor.

Small square bales can be moved in the loader bucket of a 1 Series or 3 Series John Deere tractor. If you’re moving bales frequently, we’d recommend a 3 series.

Large round or square bales will require a bigger tractor – at minimum a 4M. If you’re planning to move bales frequently, more hydraulic power and weight will help you out.
