Keeping your tractor in top shape means replacing parts when they wear out. But which option is best for you—new OEM parts, used parts, or aftermarket brands like Sunbelt and A&I?
This guide will help you make an informed decision that best respects your time and needs. As you read, keep Confidence, Value and Choice in mind – you’ll find all three of these when you buy parts from your local TriGreen Equipment John Deere dealer.
New Tractor Parts: OEM vs. Reman & Rebuilt
When you’ve been getting by with an old compact or utility tractor, the idea of buying a brand-new part might bring some hesitation. After all, wouldn’t a simple repair do the trick? Or couldn’t a used part let you eke out another season of use?
Maybe. But sometimes a replacement part is the best solution. A new tractor part gives you that fresh-off-the-lot performance for whatever was ailing your machine. And it doesn’t have to bust your budget. When you run a John Deere compact or utility tractor, you have choices when you replace a part.
OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer (AKA New!)
OEM parts are designed by the original manufacturer for your specific tractor model. Buying a John Deere OEM part means you’re getting a replacement part that’s built to the exact specs of your John Deere tractor, no matter the model or the number of machine-hours. To put it simply, they’re the best option. They offer:
- Perfect Fit & Performance – Engineered for your equipment.
- Warranty Coverage – John Deere offers a warranty on most new parts, and additional warranty if the part is dealer-installed.
- Longer Lifespan – Ideal for high-hour machines or critical components.
Choose OEM when:
- Your tractor is under warranty
- You need top reliability for engines, transmissions, or hydraulics
- Downtime is not an option
Whether you work through your local dealer or order parts online, you can pick up the replacement part right away or get it delivered within a few days.
Aftermarket
Aftermarket parts provide a middle ground between OEM and used. An aftermarket replacement part is one sold by another brand that typically makes all kinds of parts for all kinds of equipment. Aftermarket tractor parts are generic. They’re designed to fit all makes of compact and utility tractors. It may fit your machine perfectly and keep you in budget.
Two trusted brands – A&I and Sunbelt , are the preferred option for John Deere customers to consider. These brands and their corresponding parts are often available at TriGreen Equipment locations and shop.deere.com. Sunbelt and A&I parts are a good option to consider.
Choose Aftermarket when:
- You want quality and something John Deere would sign off on
- Routine maintenance or non-critical parts
- Your tractor is out of warranty
Reman & Rebuilt Parts
Short for “remanufactured,” Reman parts barely qualify as used. They are designed, rebuilt and installed by the original manufacturer. With remanufactured parts, not every component is rebuilt or repaired. Many parts are replaced with new parts. This is a better option than A&I or Sunbelt aftermarket parts.
John Deere Reman parts are completely taken apart, carefully inspected for quality and wear, fully restored to the original, factory-quality specifications, and thoroughly tested. Plus, you can expect to pay 20-30 percent less than typical brand new OEM parts.
There’s no accepted standard or definition for rebuilt parts. TriGreen Equipment does not sell or provide these to customers. It’s important to note that some suppliers may even refer to their products as refurbished parts. Whatever you call them, buying them is risky.
Choose Reman when:
- You want top quality at an affordable price
- Reliability backed by John Deere’s Reman warranty up to 2-years including labor costs
- Durable, performance tested parts
Choose Rebuilt parts when:
- You are willing to take a risk
- Have time to research and find other solutions if this method fails
Rebuilt tractor parts do not undergo comprehensive inspection and testing. The only thing new may be the component that failed or wore down. And that may be replaced with another used part or an inexpensive aftermarket alternative.
When looking into rebuilt parts for your compact or utility tractor, it’s all about the supplier. You need to understand their process, how they source parts and components, and what warranties are backing up their work to find a parts supplier you can trust. They will not be rebuilt and tested to John Deere’s standards.
Used Tractor Parts: Budget-Friendly with Trade-Offs
Used parts can save money, but condition varies. “Used” can also mean a lot of different things. The replacement part may come from a trusted manufacturer, tractor salvage yard, or any hobbyist with a passion for rebuilding machine parts. It may not even be rebuilt or repaired at all. So, you need to pay attention to where the part is coming from and what the supplier is calling it to get the best used part for your tractor.
- Lower Cost – Works for older tractors or non-critical components.
- Variable Wear – Performance depends on previous use.
- Limited or No Warranty – Usually sold “as-is.”
TriGreen Equipment does not sell used parts, and we do not recommend them for use.
How to Decide
Ask yourself:
- Is this part critical to performance or safety?
- Do I need warranty coverage?
- What is my repair budget?
- Is aftermarket quality acceptable for this component?
