Whether you’re cutting acres of thick pasture grass or hauling tools around your property in a John Deere Gator, your equipment depends on one small but mighty component: the spark plug. It’s a part most people don’t think about—until their engine won’t start.

In this guide, we’ll break down what spark plugs arehow long they lastbad spark plug symptoms, and how to replace them. We’ll also share why taking care of them is especially important for lawn mowers, compact tractors, and utility vehicles—and where you can get the right replacement parts or service at TriGreen Equipment.

What Are Spark Plugs?

A spark plug is a small device that delivers the electrical spark needed to ignite the fuel–air mixture in a gas engine. Without that spark, your engine won’t start—or it may run weak, stall, or misfire. The largest manufacturer of spark plugs is Niterra Co (formerly known as NGK Spark Plugs).

Your mower or Gator’s engine uses:

  • coil to generate electricity
  • plug wire to deliver that charge
  • spark plug to ignite the fuel

It’s a simple system… until it’s not. That’s why maintenance matters.

How Long Do They Last?

Most plugs in small engines—including those in John Deere mowers and Gators—last between:

100–300 hours of operation

or

1–2 seasons of use

But lifespan varies depending on:

  • How hard the machine works
  • Fuel quality
  • Storage conditions
  • Type of spark plug

Bad Spark Plug Symptoms

If your spark plug is worn, fouled, or has the wrong gap, you may notice these common symptoms:

  • Hard starting
  • Loss of power under load
  • Engine misfires
  • Poor fuel efficiency
  • Rough idling
  • Black smoke from exhaust
  • Engine not starting at all

If your mower cranks but won’t fire—or your Gator feels sluggish—check the spark plug first.

How Often Should You Replace Them?

As a rule of thumb: When your engine or machine performance drops, check your spark plugs. If you are looking to optimize health and longevity, replacing spark plugs every season for heavily used mowers is a good idea. Replacing spark plugs every 100 hours on Gators and UTVs is also good practice.

Replacing spark plugs at the recommended intervals keeps your equipment running longer and prevents costly repairs. What are the recommended intervals for your machine? TriGreen has you covered with operator manuals. These can also be accessed via Equipment Mobile.

How to Replace Spark Plugs (Basic Guide)

If you’re a DIYer, spark plug maintenance is one of the easiest tasks you can do. You’ll need:

  • Spark plug socket (usually 5/8″ or 13/16″)
  • Ratchet or wrench
  • Spark plug gap tool
  • New spark plugs (TriGreen can help you find the right ones)

Step-by-Step

  1. Disconnect the spark plug wire
  1. Remove the old plug with your spark plug socket
  1. Check and adjust the gap on your new plug using a spark plug gap tool
  1. Install the new plug snugly (don’t overtighten)
  1. Reconnect the wire and test

Not sure if spark is even reaching the plug? A spark plug tester can help diagnose ignition issues. Does this sound like too much? TriGreen and our service department can get this done quickly and efficiently.

Spark Plug Replacement Cost

Spark plug replacement is one of the most affordable maintenance items on your equipment.

  • Parts: Usually $5–$15 each
  • DIY: Nearly free if you have tools

Compare that to the cost of repairing a fouled engine—and spark plug maintenance becomes a no-brainer. Browse TriGreen spark plugs to order.

Why This part Is Important for Mowers & Gators

If your equipment is constantly pushed to its potential —cutting tall southern grass, towing implements, hauling loads,  you know  how demanding the work can be.  In those conditions:

  • Engines run hotter
  • Carbon buildup increases
  • Plugs wear faster

A worn plug can:

  • Reduce cutting power
  • Cause fuel waste
  • Lead to overheating
  • Shorten engine life

Good spark plugs = consistent power and clean, efficient performance.
