Step-by-Step Guide: Cleaning Your Lawn Mower Carburetor

A clean carburetor is essential to keep your John Deere lawn mower running strong. Learn how to clean and maintain yours with our expert guide.

The Importance of a Clean Carburetor for Your Lawn Mower

A lawn mower’s carburetor plays an important role in keeping your machine running smoothly. The carburetor is responsible for mixing the right amount of air and fuel needed for the engine to operate efficiently. If the carburetor is dirty or clogged, it can lead to poor engine performance, high fuel consumption, and even engine failure.

Maintaining a clean carburetor not only ensures optimal performance but also extends the lifespan of your lawn mower. Regular cleaning helps prevent issues such as hard starting, stalling, and poor acceleration. In short, a clean carburetor is vital for keeping your John Deere lawn mower in top shape.

Signs Your Lawn Mower Carburetor Needs Attention

Knowing when your carburetor needs attention can save you from bigger issues down the road. Some common signs that your carburetor may need cleaning or replacement include difficulty starting the engine, the engine running rough or stalling, black smoke from the exhaust, and increased fuel consumption.

If you notice any of that, it’s a good idea to inspect your carburetor. Early detection and maintenance can prevent more severe damage and keep your lawn mower running efficiently.

How to Remove and Replace Your Lawn Mower Carburetor

Removing and replacing a carburetor might seem daunting, but with the right steps, it can be a straightforward process. You’ll need pliers and a ratchet or nut driver, plus a screwdriver. You’ll also want gloves and safety glasses, and to complete this work in a clean area.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Ensure the lawn mower is turned off and the spark plug wire is disconnected to prevent accidental starting. If you have a riding lawn tractor, we recommend removing the hood for easiest access.

2. Locate the carburetor, which is typically found near the air filter. If you’re not sure where to look, we suggest starting under the dash, where throttle linkages are, and following those into the engine. That will help you find the right area where the carburetor is located.

3. On most mowers, you’ll have to remove the air filter cover and the air filter itself to access the carburetor. You may also have to disconnect the solenoid by pulling it off by hand.

4. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor, being careful to catch any spilling fuel in a container.

5. Detach the throttle linkage and any other connections to the carburetor.

6. Remove the mounting bolts with your ratchet or nut driver. Take out the old carburetor.

7. Install the new carburetor by reversing these steps.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Carburetor

Cleaning your carburetor can restore its functionality and improve your lawn mower’s performance. Once you have the carburetor removed, you’re ready to clean it following these steps:

1. Disassemble the carburetor, taking care to note the placement of each part. Start with the bowl, which will contain fuel. Pour the fuel out of the bowl into a fuel receptacle. Then, disassemble the top plate. If you can, remove the bowl from the inside of the carburetor. Be aware that some screws on the carburetor may be adjusting screws, rather than assembly screws. If your mower was running well before,  you likely won’t want to change the position of those adjustment screws.

2. Use a brass brush to clean any remaining debris from the metal surfaces and rinse with clean water. Check all holes for fuel and air inserts and ensure they are cleaned thoroughly.

3. If stubborn debris remains, soak the carburetor parts in a carburetor cleaner solution for the manufacturer’s recommended time. We suggest John Deere Carburetor and Choke Cleaner from your local TriGreen Equipment. It evaporates quickly and will remove debris efficiently.

4. Allow the parts to dry completely before reassembling the carburetor. We recommend changing out the gaskets when you are cleaning or replacing your carburetor.

5. Reinstall the carburetor by reversing the removal steps and reconnect all previously disconnected parts.
